Driver in pedestrian wreck likely to face drunk driving charges

A pedestrian accident led police to arrest a man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Although he has not been officially charged, the Illinois State Attorney’s office plans to file charges after fully reviewing related police reports. However, it is never too early to begin defense preparations for drunk driving charges that are likely to be filed.

Police were called to the scene of the accident some time after 2 a.m., when the female pedestrian was allegedly struck. Witnesses reported that the woman was with a group of pedestrians who illegally crossed the street. The woman ran into the road after the rest of her group, and was hit by an oncoming driver. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The 24-year-old driver apparently told police that he had attempted to avoid the pedestrians, but was unable to do so. He later submitted to a Breathalyzer test, which showed a blood-alcohol content of .13, which is above the Illinois legal limit of .08. He was apparently not injured during the wreck was taken into police custody for allegedly being drunk behind the wheel.

Once filed, drunk driving charges in Illinois tend to move swiftly, which can catch defendants off guard. Many face the possibility of having their driver’s license suspended, hefty fines and even jail time. For most people, early criminal defense preparations can help alleviate this impact, as taking the time to fully understand the charges and related evidence often provides valuable insight into how best to proceed.
