Driving under the influence is an issue throughout Illinois, but certain municipalities appear to experience more DUI arrests than others. A recent review of drunk driving data from across Illinois revealed that some areas had increased in DUI arrests while others had seen a decline. One of the locations many kept a close eye on was Naperville, which historically tends to be in the top five on the annual survey.
Despite Naperville typically having some of the highest DUI arrest numbers, it ranked ninth on the annual survey for 2017. The survey, conducted by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, compares drunk driving arrests from across Illinois police agencies. The survey does not include Chicago or any agencies that do not respond the the survey.
Naperville’s drunk driving arrests plummeted 13 percent between 2016 and 2017, a decrease that has been building for several years. In fact, the drop from 2015 to 2016 was 15 percent. There are a few reasons police say this may be happening, including ride sharing services and taxi cab stands providing easier alternatives to get home safely.
There are many reasons that certain towns have more drunk driving arrests than others. A high ranking on the list could mean that the area has more people committing these offenses, but it may also mean that police are actively patrolling for DUI offenses and are therefore more likely to catch someone driving under the influence. While DUI arrests have been decreasing in Illinois over the past few years, many people do still get arrested for this offense. Those who are facing drunk driving charges in the state should work with a defense attorney with experience in these matters.
