Some individuals from Illinois and other parts of the country use marijuana to experience the euphoric effects it is known for. However, the substance can also alter a person’s coordination and response time. A man allegedly under the influence of marijuana is facing drug charges after a recent accident in Orland Park.
A 36-year-old man from another state crashed into the back of a police squad car as they were traveling east on a city street, according to reports from the Orland Park Police Department. The driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, where he was treated and released. The officers involved in the incident also received treatment at the hospital for injuries not thought to be life-threatening.
The police alleged that the driver of the car was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. Officers also reconstructed the crash as part of their investigation. Apparently, pot and drug paraphernalia was discovered in the man’s vehicle. As the man was leaving the hospital, police officers reported that he struggled with them as they attempted to take him into custody.
The man was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also faces charges of driving under the influence or drugs, resisting a police officer and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The man was also cited for violation of driver’s license restriction.
Facing drug charges can have a far-reaching impact on someone’s life. If convicted, a person may have to pay fines and/or spend some time in jail. An Illinois criminal defense lawyer can help individuals develop a strong defense against the charges. An experienced defense team will strive to minimize the adverse effects on a client’s life.
