Drug-related charges can lead to severe penalties for an accused individual if a conviction is obtained. Those who are found in possession of large quantities of illegal drugs often face potentially devastating consequences, such as lengthy prison terms and a permanent mark on their criminal records. A former basketball standout in Illinois is reportedly facing drug charges after the recent search of his vehicle during a traffic stop.

According to reports, the man was involved in a traffic stop at around 1:30 p.m. on a recent Saturday. During this time, a K-9 unit performed an open air search, and authorities claim the unit indicated that there were illegal drugs within the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly unearthed over 70 grams of heroin, along with xanax pills and over 8 grams of cannabis.

The man was taken into custody shortly after and is reportedly facing charges for possession of heroin with intent to deliver. Charges of this nature carry serious consequences that can have a significant impact on a person’s future should he or she be convicted. According to reports, the man released a statement saying that he was told to transport the backpack, in which the drugs were allegedly found, from one specified location to another.

An individual who is facing drug charges always retains the right to obtain legal counsel before responding to allegations. By speaking with a defense attorney, an accused individual in Illinois can obtain advice on the best course of action with which to proceed. An attorney can evaluate the charges and evidence against a client and provide assistance and advice on forming a strong defense for use during court proceedings.
